Unchanging. “You Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands; they will perish, but You remain; and they will all grow old like a garment; Like a cloak You will fold them up, and they will be changed. But You are the same, And Your years will not fail.” (Heb 1:10-12, NKJV)

Zealous. “His authority shall grow continually and there shall be endless peace…He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness and from this onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.” (Isa 9:7, NRSV)

Emile Calliet, in Alone at High Noon, wrote, “He who consciously or unconsciously has chosen to ignore God is an orphan in the universe.” Don’t be alone in the universe. Believe in and embrace the God of the Bible. He indeed is an Awesome God!

“To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever. Amen.” (Jude 25, NKJV)

Sovereignty of God
The Lordship of God, the Godness of God
  1. Control - Everything happens according to His plan and intention. Nothing can stop the Lord from fulfilling his promise.
  2. Authority - All His commands ought to be obeyed.
  3. Presence - We encounter Gid’s control and authority in all our experience; omnipresent.
King Cyrus, anointed by God, his right hand empowered by Gid Himself.

3 Things God would do for Cyrus
1. Level the mountains
2. Open the gates
3. Gifts of treasures

V3-7
That you may know that I, the Lord, Who call you by your name, Am the God of Israel. For Jacob My servant’s sake, And Israel My elect, I have even called you by your name; I have named you, though you have not known Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other; There is no God besides Me. I will gird you, though you have not known Me, That they may know from the rising of the sun to its setting That there is none besides Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other; I form the light and create darkness, I make peace and create calamity; I, the Lord, do all these things.’

Ezra 1:
King Cyrus announced that he would build the temple in Jerusalem.

Isaiah 45:1-13

““Thus says the Lord to His anointed, To Cyrus, whose right hand I have held— To subdue nations before him And loose the armor of kings, To open before him the double doors, So that the gates will not be shut: ‘I will go before you And make the crooked places straight; I will break in pieces the gates of bronze And cut the bars of iron. I will give you the treasures of darkness And hidden riches of secret places, That you may know that I, the Lord, Who call you by your name, Am the God of Israel. I am the Lord, and there is no other; I form the light and create darkness, I make peace and create calamity; I, the Lord, do all these things.’ “Rain down, you heavens, from above, And let the skies pour down righteousness; Let the earth open, let them bring forth salvation, And let righteousness spring up together. I, the Lord, have created it. “Woe to him who strives with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth! Shall the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’ Or shall your handiwork say, ‘He has no hands’? Woe to him who says to his father, ‘What are you begetting?’ Or to the woman, ‘What have you brought forth?’ ” Thus says the Lord, The Holy One of Israel, and his Maker: “Ask Me of things to come concerning My sons; And concerning the work of My hands, you command Me. I have made the earth, And created man on it. I—My hands—stretched out the heavens, And all their host I have commanded. I have raised him up in righteousness, And I will direct all his ways; He shall build My city And let My exiles go free, Not for price nor reward,” Says the Lord of hosts.”

Devotion by National Chaplain 28 Sept 2019

What did Isaiah see when King Uzziah died ?

Isaiah 6: 1-8

Isaiah’s Commission
6 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”
4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.
5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”
6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

Background

Ozias-Uzziah.jpg

Isaiah's King of 52 years have died. He was a good king and a very wise king, building the nation to be strong and prosperous. His reign was "the most prosperous excepting that of Jehoshaphat since the time of Solomon." He made one mistake, trying offered sacrifice like a priest. He was struck with leprosy after that. We must know our boundary and our calling. When he disrespected God's law, King Uzziah made that fatal mistake.

During the period of Uzziah’s reign, the nation prospered, and desert areas were reclaimed by water conservation. Jerusalem’s walls were reconstructed, towers were added, and engines of war were mounted at strategic points. A large army was also maintained. The nation’s prosperity under Uzziah was considered to have been a result of the king’s fidelity to Yahweh.

According to the biblical record, Uzziah’s strength caused him to become proud, which led to his destruction. He attempted to burn incense in the Temple, an act restricted to priests. When the priests attempted to send him from the Temple, the king became angry and was immediately stricken with leprosy. His son Jotham ruled for his father until Uzziah died.

King Uzziah ruled Judah from the age of 16 years old, after he had leprosy, his son took over the throne but he remained as king until he died. The whole nation mourned the loss a great king, they were all lost without him, including Isaiah. Perhaps before the king died, Isaiah was also over dependent on the power of King Uzziah until he did not realise Jehovah was the greatest King over them.

At turning point in history, God will show Himself to the people He wants to call. In the pivotal time of change, God opened to Isaiah's eyes to see who is the real king. All along Isaiah could only see one king in his life, now his eyes opened.

What did Isaiah see -

1) Death - King Uzziah was a great king, revered, honoured, worshiped and he was dead, no one to look up to as king
2) Splendour of God
3) Reverence of God
4) God sitting in His Throne
5) Majestic Train of God's robe hanging from His throne covering the entire temple!
6) Angelic Beings worshiping God
7) Holiness of God
8) Glorious appearance of God

Here is a sermon on the same verse :-

Malaysia Year of Prayer 2020

3 Things to achieve for every Christian who commits to pray:-

1) We grow in consistency in our prayer life.
2) At 12 noon, everyone pause to pray.
3) Pray for 5 people to come to know the Lord.

Declaration through prayers is important just like what happened in the 1969 Apollo 11 Mission, when they broadcasted first time from space to earth with the largest audience tuning in, the astronauts decided to recite Genesis Chapter 1.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_8_Genesis_reading

William Anders

We are now approaching lunar sunrise, and for all the people back on Earth, the crew of Apollo 8 has a message that we would like to send to you.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

James Lovell

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

Frank Borman

And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called the Seas: and God saw that it was good.

And from the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas – and God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth.

They dared to declare the Word of God over the whole earth and yet when they returned to earth, NASA faced a lawsuit over this reading of Genesis Chapter 1.

Lawsuit

Madalyn Murray O'Hair, founder of American Atheists, responded by suing the United States government, alleging violations of the First Amendment. The suit was filed in the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas. It was submitted to a three-judge panel, which concluded that the case was not a three-judge matter, and dismissed the case for failure to state a cause of action. The direct appeal to the Supreme Court was dismissed for lack of jurisdiction. Another appeal was heard before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which affirmed the trial court's dismissal per curiam. The Supreme Court declined to review the case.

Later, on the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, Buzz Aldrin took Communion on the lunar surface shortly after landing, using bread and wine he brought from his home church congregation. When he tried to speak to the flight crew operations manager and get the permission to broadcast his singular celebration of the Holy Communion service, he was answered with "keep your comments more general". Hence, over the radio he merely asked his listeners to pause and reflect on the events of the last few hours, and give thanks in their own way. He then read the specifically Christian scripture, John 15:5, off-air. However, after the Apollo team was reunited and heading back to earth, Aldrin read aloud a second scripture that was scrawled on the same notecard but of a more universally human reference from the Old Testament, Psalm 8:3–4, "When I considered the heavens, the work of Thy fingers, the moon and the stars which Thou hast ordained, what is man that Thou art mindful of him." This reading was broadcast live to the entire earth just as was the Genesis 1 reading so objectionable to O'Hair, and was depicted in the 1969 documentary, Footprints on the Moon: Apollo 11 (beginning at 1:28:32), but stimulated no further antitheistic legal action.

Rich Toward God

Topic : Rich Toward God
Text : Luke 12: 13-21
4 Aug 2019
Rev Ngui Au Sze

Introduction

The background to the passage This is the parable to the rich fool. Jesus was teaching in a large crowd with the disciples on how to confess their faith even if it meant that they will be arrested by the authorities and come before judges.

1. What provoked Jesus? (vs 13-15) Jesus was annoyed with the man who ask a questioned regarding his family inheritance dispute while Jesus was trying to encourage the disciples that in the future they may have to face hardship for their faith. The man’s question showed that he was more concerned about his inheritance and well-being rather than his faith thus disturbing Jesus teaching. Jesus reminded him that there are more important matters beside riches and inheritance.

2. Why is the rich man a fool? (vs 16-20)

a. An abundant harvest = a good agriculturalist He was a good and careful farmer and knew how to cultivate his land to yield good harvests consistently.

b. Storing up grain = “saving for a rainy day” He was wise enough to store up grain for those lean years of harvest and building bigger barns to store even more grains to create a bigger buffer for the eventual extra lean harvest.
How to store the grains is just as important else it will rot and be of no use in the future.

c. How long a life = in God’s Hand The farmer is considered a wise man in every aspect in his stewardship of his crop and harvest however he made the mistake that he thought he is in control with the length of his life in this this world. He was called a fool because he had accorded finite things with infinite value and as a result before dawn came, his live ended.

3. Rich toward God (vs 21) He was a fool because he was not rich towards God for he did not acknowledge God who had provided rain and sunshine for the abundant harvest that had made him very successful. He had made no acknowledgement of God in his life nor did he feel God had anything to do with his life. He does not think of God and his relationship with him but only of his crop and the enjoyment of his life. We do not know when Christ will come again or will we meet Him first. We cannot control the infinite with the finite and therefore we must prepare ourselves to meet God anytime. Unlike the foolish rich man who thought he could have control over infinite matter, we must live a live that is prepared to meet God face to face and, in the process, cultivating a deep intimacy with our Lord.

Conclusion

The question we need to ask in our lives is that is our material abundance sufficient to meet the weight of meaning, significance and joy that we seek. It is only when we are rich towards God that He can grant us the confidence that we are worthy of love and honour and in right relationship with God and neighbour. These are the pursuit of infinite things that we should be after.

Reflection questions:

1. A man asked Jesus to tell his brother to share the inheritance with him. Is this a good solution to solve this problem? Why or why not?

2. How do we store up things for ourselves?

3. What does it require to be rich toward God? Are there other ways beside what was shared in the sermon?
