What did Isaiah see when King Uzziah died ?

Isaiah 6: 1-8

Isaiah’s Commission
6 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”
4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.
5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”
6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

Isaiah's King of 52 years have died. He was a good king and a very wise king, building the nation to be strong and prosperous. His reign was "the most prosperous excepting that of Jehoshaphat since the time of Solomon." He made one mistake, trying offered sacrifice like a priest. He was struck with leprosy after that. We must know our boundary and our calling. When he disrespected God's law, King Uzziah made that fatal mistake.

During the period of Uzziah’s reign, the nation prospered, and desert areas were reclaimed by water conservation. Jerusalem’s walls were reconstructed, towers were added, and engines of war were mounted at strategic points. A large army was also maintained. The nation’s prosperity under Uzziah was considered to have been a result of the king’s fidelity to Yahweh.

According to the biblical record, Uzziah’s strength caused him to become proud, which led to his destruction. He attempted to burn incense in the Temple, an act restricted to priests. When the priests attempted to send him from the Temple, the king became angry and was immediately stricken with leprosy. His son Jotham ruled for his father until Uzziah died.

King Uzziah ruled Judah from the age of 16 years old, after he had leprosy, his son took over the throne but he remained as king until he died. The whole nation mourned the loss a great king, they were all lost without him, including Isaiah. Perhaps before the king died, Isaiah was also over dependent on the power of King Uzziah until he did not realise Jehovah was the greatest King over them.

At turning point in history, God will show Himself to the people He wants to call. In the pivotal time of change, God opened to Isaiah's eyes to see who is the real king. All along Isaiah could only see one king in his life, now his eyes opened.

What did Isaiah see -

1) Death - King Uzziah was a great king, revered, honoured, worshiped and he was dead, no one to look up to as king
2) Splendour of God
3) Reverence of God
4) God sitting in His Throne
5) Majestic Train of God's robe hanging from His throne covering the entire temple!
6) Angelic Beings worshiping God
7) Holiness of God
8) Glorious appearance of God

Here is a sermon on the same verse :-

Malaysia Year of Prayer 2020

3 Things to achieve for every Christian who commits to pray:-

1) We grow in consistency in our prayer life.
2) At 12 noon, everyone pause to pray.
3) Pray for 5 people to come to know the Lord.

Declaration through prayers is important just like what happened in the 1969 Apollo 11 Mission, when they broadcasted first time from space to earth with the largest audience tuning in, the astronauts decided to recite Genesis Chapter 1.

William Anders

We are now approaching lunar sunrise, and for all the people back on Earth, the crew of Apollo 8 has a message that we would like to send to you.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

James Lovell

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

Frank Borman

And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called the Seas: and God saw that it was good.

And from the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas – and God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth.

They dared to declare the Word of God over the whole earth and yet when they returned to earth, NASA faced a lawsuit over this reading of Genesis Chapter 1.

Lawsuit

Madalyn Murray O'Hair, founder of American Atheists, responded by suing the United States government, alleging violations of the First Amendment. The suit was filed in the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas. It was submitted to a three-judge panel, which concluded that the case was not a three-judge matter, and dismissed the case for failure to state a cause of action. The direct appeal to the Supreme Court was dismissed for lack of jurisdiction. Another appeal was heard before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which affirmed the trial court's dismissal per curiam. The Supreme Court declined to review the case.

Later, on the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, Buzz Aldrin took Communion on the lunar surface shortly after landing, using bread and wine he brought from his home church congregation. When he tried to speak to the flight crew operations manager and get the permission to broadcast his singular celebration of the Holy Communion service, he was answered with "keep your comments more general". Hence, over the radio he merely asked his listeners to pause and reflect on the events of the last few hours, and give thanks in their own way. He then read the specifically Christian scripture, John 15:5, off-air. However, after the Apollo team was reunited and heading back to earth, Aldrin read aloud a second scripture that was scrawled on the same notecard but of a more universally human reference from the Old Testament, Psalm 8:3–4, "When I considered the heavens, the work of Thy fingers, the moon and the stars which Thou hast ordained, what is man that Thou art mindful of him." This reading was broadcast live to the entire earth just as was the Genesis 1 reading so objectionable to O'Hair, and was depicted in the 1969 documentary, Footprints on the Moon: Apollo 11 (beginning at 1:28:32), but stimulated no further antitheistic legal action.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

Topic: Do you have enough oil for your lamp?
Text Matthew 25:1-13

Pr Lo Yi Ping

Outline Background
Parables are stories told by Jesus to explain the kingdom of God, shows the character of God and how believers should live in light of the coming kingdom of God. Normally they are in contrast of two groups of people and in this case are the wise versus the foolish virgins. This is the event of waiting for the bridegroom that is taking a while to come and they became tired as they waited. But when the bridegroom arrived is where the contrast was seen between the two groups of the virgins. One group have lamps with no oil and the other took extra oil with them to replenish their lamps. It showed the wise virgins were ready for the event whereas the foolish virgins were unprepared and eventually the wise virgins entered the banquet hall while the foolish virgins were shut out.

This parable was to illustrate the time when the kingdom of God will arrive. The disciples have not understood about Jesus’s suffering and departure and coming back at a later time. Likewise, today we too are like the disciples then asking about the time, date and signs of the second coming of Christ and how we should prepare for it.

 1. The wedding is planned; the bridegroom is coming- Christ is coming Back! (Mt. 24:44)
In a Jewish wedding, the father of the groom visits the bride’s family and  pays for the bride price and establish the marriage covenant in the presence of witnesses. The covenant could be arranged when the children were young or in their adulthood and within one year to the time of marriage. The bride and groom do not meet until their wedding day. Next will be the preparation of the bridal chamber and may take about a year or more. The bride will be waiting for the return of the bridegroom during this time. When the chamber is completed, the father will determine when to fetch the bride to his house.

In the same way, our heavenly Father also came to us to make the marriage proposal and paid for it with a heavy price of His son in order for us to enter into a marriage relationship with Him. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Ephesians 5:25. God initiated the relationship. He came to look for us first. When we accept Jesus as our personal saviour, we are accepting the bride price and the marriage covenant with God is set and our confirmation and baptism is a public declaration among witnesses that we belong to Jesus and He belongs to us. Likewise, Jesus also goes back to the Father’s house to prepare the bridal chamber to us. And how Jesus went back to the Father’s place, He will also come back for us in the same way. The only thing we are not certain about is the time of His coming back. John 14:2, Acts 1:11. Only the heavenly Father knows the time Jesus will come back and no one else. Matt 24:36, John 14:3. Despite it has been more then 2000 years since Jesus went back to the Father, the scriptures tells us that His promise will be fulfilled. Matt 24: 34-35.

2.   Watch out because you do not know the day or the hour. I have told you ahead of time.
The bridegroom coming is unknown so it is always preceded by a shout to warn the bride that the groom is coming. Matt 25: 6-7. We are to watch out for the coming of Christ again as only the heavenly Father know the timing and Jesus have told to us this ahead of time. We maybe in the midst of some event but we are to immediately respond to His coming. Matt 24:37-39. Just like the virgins, 5 were invited into the banquet, the other 5 were shut out, so we too will be if we were found to be unprepared. Matt 24: 39-41. This the message to all believers ie all the ten virgins were believers as told in the parable. Just like Noah warned his people, those who chose to ignore his message were wiped out so we too need to heed the above warning. By faith Noah took God’s word to heart and heeded the warning and his family was saved.

3.   You were invited. Are you ready for the party? Are you preparing?
Was God showing favouritism when He only chose the 5 virgins to the banquet? Were they more intelligent or smarter than the rest? Shouldn’t God have let all in? The key to enter the banquet was about one’s readiness and preparedness and not about one’s intelligence. The other 5 virgins were not around when the bridegroom arrived for they were looking for oil for their lamps and as a result missed the banquet. The other 5 virgins couldn’t possibly share their oil as they will need all the oil as they have a way to go to the banquet. The light that was emitted is also limited to the front of their feet. As the verse states, thy word is a lamp on my feet and a light to my path, oil is likened to the spirit and the word of God. For believers to go further in our spiritual journey, we need the word and spirit of God in our lives for without these two, there can be no true salvation. Likewise in our Discipleship Journey, we need to have an encounter with God, experience God by the Spirit and read the word of God so that when we move out of our comfort zone, in times of adversity, we can testify that as the Holy Spirit empowered us we can achieve something beyond our ability and that is the time we can testify that God is faithful and He is the one who empowered and enabled us to achieve what we cannot do on our own. However, when we do not respond to opportunities to serve, one day God may say that He does not know us. For God to know us, it has to be experiential. Our times spent on the reading the Bible, serving, body ministry in the Connect Group, experiencing the life of the faith community are the ways of adding oil in our oil jar. Such encounter and knowledge gained with the Lord can only be experienced personally and this experience cannot be transferred just like the oil cannot be shared with the other virgins. So, it is important for us to stock up our own oil jar. We are all invited to the banquet but are we ready for the party?  In our preparation, are we reading the word of God and having regular devotion, experiencing God daily, pray often, putting ourselves through some spiritual discipline such as fasting and meditating, joining a CG or a group of brothers or sisters to grow spiritually with. This is where we learn to grow our spiritual character, such as loving one another, patience, kindness and perseverance. In our serving, are we putting God given talents to use, setting a goal to grow oneself spiritually, learning new things or reading spiritual books to prepare ourselves? In constant upgrading ourselves, we will have fresh experience and testimonies to share each year. Through it all, God will show He is faithful, for He walks us through the process, He sustains us and we learn to depend on God for one cannot do it on our strength. The guidance of the Holy Spirit and the teaching of God’s word will give us revelation after revelation to the mystery of God’s kingdom. If we have resisted change, then our experience would have been much hampered. This is one way of adding oil bit by bit to keep the light burning.

The picture of Hieronymus Francken the Younger (c. 1616) gave another perspective of the parable of how the two groups of virgins are preparing for the bridegroom. We need to evaluate our lifestyle of indulgence on earthly things that are not pleasing to God. Is our lives are entangled with things that pulls us down preventing us from moving forward, are we loving our live so much that we are not willing to give it up for the eternal kingdom, procrastinating in thinking we still have a lot of time.

Conclusion
It is never God’s intention to eliminate anyone but it is His heart’s desire for all nations to join the banquet. He desires us to make disciples of all the nations. Matt 28:19-20. Mark 16: 15-16
Our hearts and love may grow cold while waiting for the bridegroom to come if we do not cultivate the discipline of daily devotion with God. Matt 24:12-13
We keep watch for we do not know the day or hour God will come.  Mat 25: 13, 24: 42-44

Questions for discussion:
1. Jesus promised to return for us, what if he never comes, how will that affect our hope of salvation? If you can choose the date of Jesus return, would you prefer him to come sooner or later? Why?
2. The church is encouraging everyone to be on this Discipleship Journey together. In what way do you think the four quadrants "Connect, Equip, Mentor and Release" will be helpful in preparing you for Jesus' coming?
3. "Not everyone who says to me 'Lord, Lord' will enter the kingdom of heaven." How do you view God with regards to this statement?

The Parable of the Great Supper: ’Who will we invite to the banquet?’

Topic: The Parable of the Great Supper: ’Who will we invite to the banquet?’
Text: Luke 14:16-24
Rev Rennie Khoo
1 st September 2019

Introduction

In a Chinese wedding banquet, it is not unusual for the bride and groom to meet their elderly guests for the 1st and the last time. The parents of the couple will invite the guests, in turn the guests will reciprocate by attending the dinner banquet. This ‘reciprocity’ is observed and taken seriously as it creates a relationship.

Similarly, the old parable in the bible, like the present days, also observed this kind of reciprocity!

1. There is still room! [Luke14:22] Jesus had shared many parables that had to do with hospitality. At a banquet, ‘Jesus shared that when a host invited friends and relatives to a banquet, they will have to reciprocate and return the invitation. But when you invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind, Jesus said you will be blessed because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous’ [Luke 14:13]. This represents reciprocity.

Furthermore, guests who had accepted invitations but did not come and gave excuses, may cause humiliation to the host [vs 15]. The excuses in the parable gets progressively ugly and ridiculous as well as rude.

Firstly, these guests are quite wealthy, so these lame excuses can only expose the reality. Those days, social relationships were prized, so these actions can break a relationship. Thus, the master invited the other poor people; firstly, whoever that is poor in the city and secondly, … ‘to go even further to the peripheral to invite the extremely poor’ to come to the banquet!

2. How can we understand this parable in the present day and in a fresh way?

i. As invitees: Have we responded? What excuses would we give for not coming to the banquet? Are there other things more important than God’s call to discipleship in the Kingdom? We need to place ourselves as one who is invited. This stands out as a testimony and likens the Holy Communion to the Banquet of the Kingdom of God! We are mandated to do this fellowshipping with His Father! And if there is still room, then we need to echo this in the CGs.

ii. As servants: Have we invited, or have we been inviting others? What excuses would we give for not inviting the margins of society (or people who are different from us) to the banquet, especially those who cannot repay us? Are we too preoccupied with self, comfort and convenience over the many out there who need to be invited, who are waiting to be invited? Even as our multiplication challenges our convenience, we need to reach out to others. They may be people who are lost and who have not been experiencing the abundance that we have enjoyed, as we know He will never leave us and we need to embrace it to experience God’s love. Conclusion Yes, there is still room! So are you living the life that God destined you - to invite others? We are called to invite others as there is still room in God’s Kingdom.

Questions:
1. If you were the host and you were told of the excuses of your guests for not coming to the banquet that you prepared, how would you have felt? Would you then have invited ‘the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame?’ Why or why not?

2. What are some of the excuses you may have for refusing to come to the banquet of God? Are these excuses genuine? Why or why not?

3. What can you do to reach the poor, the crippled, the blind man and the lame?’ – those who have nothing to offer, but who must in fact be urged to come to the banquet?

4. There is still room!’ (vs22). How is this statement challenging/enlarging your heart for a global vision/mission?

5. The parable ends with a word of judgment upon those who had originally been invited but then made excuses for not coming to the banquet (v24). How might this parable be a warning to us?
